What is through-feed machining?
Through-feed machining means that the workpiece is pushed through the machine by means of a feed unit. The workpiece is pushed along the tools which initiates the cutting process. As several tools can come into operation one after the other, the complete workpiece machining can be done. In through-feed processing, the difference is made between machines with chain feed and machines with roller feed.
Advantages and disadvantages of through-feed machining
Through-feed machining allows high production output as all operations on the workpiece can be made almost simultaneously. However, retooling of the machine is time-consuming and requires large batch sizes to avoid production stop to the greatest possible extent.
Recent demands
As the trend goes to smaller batch sizes, more and more elements from stationary technology are integrated in through-feed machining; among others automatized tool changers, motors with HSK interface, pre-setted tools, controlled aggregates for contour milling or for boring of material passing through. To meet the demands for increasing feedrates, more and more high-dynamic linear drives are applied in the controlled aggregates.

One recent demand on modern tools is the audible reduction of noise on milling aggregates which are not enclosed by a cabin but only wrapped by the sheet of the chip extraction hood.
